Cosmologist has joined the Joe Pride camp after a successful early career that included winning a heat of the Country Championship in the autumn. He appears to have lost nothing since joining his new stable, as he went to Hawkesbury first up and produced a tough effort to win narrowly, with the best part of his race being the last 100m where he knuckled down impressively to overhaul the leader. Expect Sam Weatherley to go forward on him, possibly even lead, and give him every chance.

Scratches (Canterbury Race 5, No.8)

Scratches is a lightly raced, progressive middle distance horse from the Chris Waller yard. She comes off a last start second placing at this track, behind only a stablemate who was having his first run in Australia and might do some damage in some decent staying races this spring. Waller was patient before bringing her to town and with that good run under her belt, she looks ideally placed to break through here.

Merchant of Venice (Bendigo Race 4, No.10)

Going from maiden to BM64 grade is always a challenge but the win of Merchant of Venice was impressive enough that The Wolf is confident he can do it. A son of So You Think trained at Mornington by Jason Warren, he got back on debut and was always wide but when called up by Ben Melham he responded with a tremendous turn of foot to win on his ear. Unsurprisingly, Melham has stuck with him today and even though this race is harder, he has enough upside to give this a massive shake.

Steel Prince (Bendigo Race 6, No.12)

Irish import Steel Prince comes off back to back second placings at Sandown, both runs that were full of merit coming from well back in the field. The latter was under 61Kg in a race that was dominated by a front runner. With these runs under his belt, and the Darren Weir polish, he looks ideally placed to break through for his first Australian win.

Written Choice (Bendigo Race 7, No.14)

Written Choice is a lightly raced sprinter with serious upside. The winner of two from five, first up last autumn he was a certainty beaten but redeemed himself next start with a dominant all the way victory at Caulfield. After a fourth placing at Caulfield he was spelled, and his recent trial suggested he has come back better than ever. He has drawn wide but with only one bend over the 1000m at Bendigo it shouldn’t trouble him too much.
